LONDON – The UK's government has approved the use of erectile dysfunction drugs in the UK as a treatment for erectile dysfunction (ED).

The approval comes after a report by the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) highlighted that there was a "sudden decline in effectiveness of Viagra", which was due to a lack of evidence about the safety of the medication in patients with certain medical conditions.

Dr Berkeley Phillips, the MHRA's medical director, said: "I am sure we would be pleased to see the uptake of Viagra by men over the age of 50 and to see a significant reduction in deaths caused by cardiovascular disease."

However, there was a sharp rise in rates of erectile dysfunction in the United Kingdom, with more than 30% of men aged 40 and over in the last quarter of 2022 (see figure 1).

The increase in rates is part of a wider trend of increasing the number of men aged 50 and older taking ED drugs, which has also contributed to a drop in the incidence of ED in the last decade.

"In the UK, the number of men over the age of 40 is expected to have fallen by more than 50% in 2023 and by the proportion of men aged 40 to 70 will be reduced by approximately half in the next 2023," said Dr Phillips.

In April, he added that the proportion of men aged 50 and over with erectile dysfunction had increased by around 30% from 2022 to 2023.

The study was funded by the British Medical Association.

But while Viagra was approved in the UK as a treatment for ED, there were concerns it would cause harm to patients with diabetes and other diabetes conditions.

According to a published in the journalThe Lancet, in 2021, a study published in theNew England Journal of Medicinefound that users of erectile dysfunction drugs increased their blood sugar levels and their risk of type 2 diabetes was significantly higher, compared to those who did not take the medication.

The study, conducted by researchers at the University of Oxford, was published on the same day that the MHRA's report was due to go on sale.

The study, led by Dr Berkeley Phillips, showed that men who used the medication for more than six months and had taken it for a year were less likely to develop diabetes. The authors said that in addition to the higher blood sugar levels, the increased risk was associated with the longer duration of the medication, as well as with the use of higher dosages.

The study, which was published in, showed that men with ED who were aged 18 to 41 had a 5.9 times higher risk of developing diabetes compared to those who were aged 45 to 64, and an 18.4 times higher risk.

Professor Phillips said: "These data suggest that the use of Viagra is likely to be associated with a greater risk of diabetes-related complications than older men taking similar medications.
